Collect(ive): The Grinnell People's Museum (GPM)

Over a six month period, we mined a variety of college collections and scanned personal objects to engage the community of Grinnell Iowa in place-based creative art making to give visual form to local personal narratives and interests.The result of this process was embedded in three locations: the Drake Community Library, the Joe Rosenfield '25 Center and the Grinnell College Museum.
The images on view are of objects owned by Grinnellians of all ages and backgrounds. Each object means something special to someone in the community. Together, they create a collective picture of Grinnell, defined by the artifacts people choose to keep—and share.
Binders cataloging every object scanned, along with information and stories provided by the participants are available in the Grinnell College Museum of Art and Drake Community Library. The GPM Field Guide contains examples of individual objects and stories.
